12 Wardrobe Staples to Always Have on Hand

12 Wardrobe Staples to Always Have on Hand

Fashion trends are notorious for being hot one day and cold the next, but there are certain staples to keep in your closet that will remain on-trend for decades. Here are 12 pieces you can always count on to be in style.

Blazer

A great blazer can do wonders for all kinds of outfits, from office wear to something more casual. You can pair it with almost anything, including jeans, pants, and skirts. Choose a blazer in a neutral color like black, white, or navy so you can easily coordinate your look.

White Tank Top

The white tank top is one of the most widely known wardrobe staples. It is versatile enough to be worn in a huge variety of ways. In warm weather, wear it with a pair of short shorts. When it's colder outside, use it as the first level of a layered outfit. It will look great under a jacket, a button-down shirt, or a t-shirt, but it will also look terrific all by itself.

Black Leggings

Leggings are arguably among the most comfortable pieces you have in your closet, and you will always want to have a pair ready to throw on when you don't want to try too hard. Black is the right color choice because it goes with just about anything and makes most people feel slimmer. Pair your leggings with just about any t-shirt and you are ready to work out or just leave the house for some groceries.

White Sneakers

Everyone should have at least one great-fitting pair of sneakers. If you only have one pair, make them white. White sneakers can be worn with jeans on the weekend, but are classic enough that you can usually get away with wearing them to the office or in another more upscale environment. They can go with dresses and pants suits as well as athletic clothing. The key to the white sneaker is to keep it clean and bright. Sneakers with scuffs or dirt showing just aren't the same.

Jeans

It's hard to imagine a time when a pair of jeans wasn't a must-have piece in any closet, but there was a time when that was true. Your grandmother or great-grandmother might not have ever owned a pair of jeans. Now we can't picture life without them.

Make sure you have at least one pair of blue jeans that fits well and feels good. They can be in a light or dark wash, and in a variety of styles from skinny to boot-cut. You will be able to wear your jeans with just about any top, which makes them a crucial part of your wardrobe.

Sandals

A neutral pair of sandals is key when it comes to outfitting your feet. Strappy sandals are a good choice because they can be dressed up or down, but you can go with a classic buckle if you prefer. Brown or another neutral color like taupe is a good choice for versatility.

Floral Print Dress

Even if you don't wear dresses often, you will want to have at least one dress that you can grab on occasions when you want to wear something with feminine flair. Dress it up with strappy sandals and a wide-brimmed hat, or down with sneakers and a denim jacket. A floral print is a classic choice that will always be in style.

White Dress Shirt

A white dress shirt can look professional with a pair of black pants and a blazer, or it can look sexy and casual with a pair of jeans. You can also use it in a layered outfit under a sweater or sweatshirt.

Jean Jacket

A denim jacket is a statement piece that gives you a cool, casual vibe. Jean jackets come in all kinds of colors, including classic blues and white. Wear them with pants, skirts, dresses, or jeans.

A-Line Skirt

The A-line is a traditional cut that looks good on everyone, so it's the perfect choice if you are going to have just one skirt. Choose a skirt in a versatile color like black, brown, or navy so you can pair it with most of your tops.

Black Flats

While it's nice to have a pair of dressy heels, flats are the more versatile choice. This is especially true for people who wear athletic shoes most of the time. Buy a pair of classic flats or ballet flats in black, and you will be able to wear them with many different outfits.

The clothing you have in your wardrobe is likely to change as trends come and go, but there are a few pieces that can be counted on to stand the test of time. Keep your closet stocked with these 12 staples, and you will be ready to dress for any occasion.
